In some ways, it’s a typical summer week with a few huge block parties, outside dance performances, and some cutting edge art in Western Queens. But the borough also hosts a full-moon drumming circle, a particularly spicy meal, and a Hogwarts extravaganza.
Aug. 23, Jazzmobile Block Party, 4 pm. Family activities, the Empanada Papa food truck, and live music with the Jeremy Bosch Quartet and the Roland Guerrero Quartet. Free. Louis Armstrong House Museum, 34-56 107th St., Corona.
Aug. 23, Brahms Requiem, 7:30 pm. Local conductors lead an open performance with the public and members of the Oratorio Society of Queens, Forest Hills Choir, and Schola Sine Nomine. $15. Our Lady of Mercy Church, 70-01 Kessel St., Forest Hills.
Aug. 23, Black Panther, Aug. 26. This blockbuster film screens daily at 11 am as part of a matinee series. $15. (Editor’s note: First screening is on Aug. 22.) Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District.
Aug. 24, Full Moon Drumming: Mexico, 7 pm. Celebrate the full moon with George Saenz from Calpulli Mexican Dance Company. He demonstrates Mexican rhythms on huehuetl drums, ayoyote shakers, bombo, redoblante, and pander. Then, the entire group jams. $25. Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd.
Aug. 24, Prodigy Adventures, 3 pm. The Queens Council on the Arts presents an evening of dance, poetry, art, and music in memory of the Queens-reared rapper Prodigy. Liberty Park, vicinity of Liberty Avenue and 172nd Street, Jamaica.
Aug. 25, Beach Sessions Dance, Aug. 26. Dozens of artists perform on the beach, boardwalk, and a local architectural marvel on Aug. 25, 5 pm to 9 pm, and Aug. 26, 2 pm to 5 pm. Free. Vicinity of Beach 110th Street and boardwalk and The Castle, Beach 117th Street and Newport Avenue, Rockaway.
Aug. 25, Nervous Magic Lantern and Contour Editions: Imaginary 3-D Tour of Rubble Cities, 2 pm. Watch the abstract imagery of avant-garde film pioneer Ken Jacobs and listen to live sound art by six contemporary musicians. $15. Aug. 29, Queens Dinner Club: Szechuan, 7:30 pm. This monthly group explores top-notch Chinese cuisine. Menu includes Black fungus with spicy and sour sauce, Cumin lamb with red chili, Braised whole fish with bok choy and tofu, and Dry fried beef threads. $50.
