#PickoftheWeek | Yummy in your tummy! Queens shows good taste with two cooking classes
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Queens shows its Asian taste with two fantastic culinary classes this week.
Chef Penn Hongthong will teach the wonders of Lao cuisine at the Alley Pond Environmental Center in Douglaston on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 pm.
Penn, who wrote Simple Laotian Cooking and Healthy Lao Cuisine and hosts the Simple Lao Cuisine show on Public Access LTV East Hampton, will offer her wisdom on making vegetable soup with pork neck bones, fish soup with lemongrass and tomatoes, and Asian squash soup.
Penn was born in Laos, but her family fled to a refugee camp in Thailand when she was little girl after a communist regime took power in her native country. The family immigrated to the United States in 1980.
A few days earlier on Sunday, Jan. 21, Meyer Wakneen will host the Great Sushi & Chinese Cookout at the MJO Shaar HaShamayim Synagogue in Forest Hills at 5:30 pm.
The former executive chef at the Essex House Hotel in Manhattan will begin with a short demonstration on knife skills. Then, a hands-on lesson on making kosher California rolls, Chinese chicken, and vegan treats will follow.
Wakneen specializes in Kosher French cuisine and pastries and has offered the Great Challah Bake at the same Forest Hills temple before.
Admission is $10, and only women and girls over the age of 10 can attend. Space is limited. To reserve a seat, call 718.263.8102.
Of course, there will be tastings at both events.
