#PickoftheWeek | The ‘Historic Jackson Heights Weekend’ Is Here
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Jackson Heights is the first planned garden-and-cooperative community in the entire United States. Parts of it have federal, state, and city landmark designations.
Today, it’s one of the world’s most diverse neighborhoods with fantastic restaurants, beautiful architecture, verdant courtyards, gay life, Latin flair, Indian jewelry, and Himalayan momos.
In other words, it’s worth the trip, especially during the Historic Jackson Heights Weekend on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12.
Organized by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, this two-day extravaganza features walking tours, slide lectures, an exhibition, and top-notch local networking.
Rain or shine.
The free slide lecture will take place twice – 10:45 am and 12:15 pm – at the Community United Methodist Church at 81-10 35th Ave. on June 11. The same religious institution will host the vintage exhibition of photos, maps, brochures, and other memorabilia from 10 am to 2 pm on the same day. Meanwhile from noon to 4 pm, patrons will be able to pay $10 and take self-guided tours of the famous inner courtyards of the garden apartments that were built in the 1920s.
Then on June 12, participants who buy tickets for $10 each will meet in front of the church at noon to take a walking tour with experienced guides. They’ll learn about local history, housing, and demographics.
Tickets are currently available at Espresso 77 at 35-57 77th St. For more information, call 347.766.9129.
