#PickoftheWeek | Queens Pride Parade Returns to the Great Outdoors on June 5
BY QEDC It's In Queens
After a Covid-provoked hiatus, one of the borough’s most colorful and creative outdoor events returns with a slightly different name.
The New Queens Pride Parade is set for the vicinity of 37th Road and 75th Street in Jackson Heights on June 5 from around noon to 6 pm.
Expect a fun afternoon of marchers, vendors, performances, costumes, drag queens, and lavender lines in certain sections of the roadways. (Maybe a few politicians, too.)
The Grand Marshals are City Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams and the nonprofits Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo and Caribbean Equality Project.
Founded in 1993, Queens Pride is the second oldest pride parade in New York City and the second largest. The original goal was to raise the local LGBT community’s visibility and pay homage to Julio Rivera, who was murdered by three thugs with a hammer, wrench, and knife near 78th Street and 37th Avenue on July 2, 1990. The community responded with outrage, activism, and candlelight vigils, sparking the creation of several local LGBT organizations.
Currently, the LGBT Network organizes Queens Pride, which is expected to draw at least 50,000 revelers this year.
