#PickoftheWeek | Queens Farm Hosts Annual Powwow
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Native Americans from around the hemisphere will bring their dance talent and colorful outfits to a local apple orchard next weekend.
Queens County Farm Museum hosts the Thunderbird American Indian Powwow from Friday, July 29, through Sunday, July 31.
The 43rd annual celebration is centered on friendly dance competitions among several dozens Native Nations (i.e. Cherokee, Matinecock, Navajo, Shinnecock). Dressed in traditional outfits, contestants will perform several dozen different dances (i.e. Buffalo, Grass, Hoop, Smoke). There will also be non-competitive dances in the Gourd, Round, and Rabbit categories along with demonstrations of Apache, Iroquois, and Pueblo choreography.
The Thunderbird American Indian Powwow is also a three-day outdoor marketplace with Native art, book, clothes, crafts, food, and jewelry for sale. (Try the fry bread and buffalo burgers!) Plus, a bonfire will light at sunset on Friday and Saturday with planned dance circles.
The gates open at 6 pm on Friday with performances scheduled for 7 pm to 10 pm. Meanwhile, Saturday’s performances are set to run from noon to 5 pm and 7 pm to 10 pm with the Sunday shows happening from noon to 5 pm.
General admission is $15 for a one-day pass which costs $8 for children (ages 2-12). A three-day pass is $30, but $16 for children in the same age range.
Queens County Farm Museum, which has a free parking lot, is located at 73-50 Little Neck Parkway in Glen Oaks.
