#PickoftheWeek | Powwow Features Native American Dance, Crafts, Food
BY QEDC It's In Queens
It’s New York City’s oldest and largest Native American dance competition and it takes place in an apple orchard.
Queens County Farm Museum hosts the Thunderbird American Indian Powwow from Friday, July 23, through Sunday, July 25.
This 42nd annual celebration is centered on friendly dance competitions involving more than 40 Native Nations (i.e. Cherokee, Matinecock, Navajo, Shinnecock). Dressed in colorful traditional outfits, contestants will perform several dozen different dances (i.e. Buffalo, Grass, Hoop, Smoke).
Thunderbird American Indian Powwow is also a three-day outdoor marketplace with Native art, book, clothes, crafts, food, and jewelry for sale. (Try the fry bread!)
The Friday performances are scheduled for 7 pm to 10 pm, while Saturday’s two sessions are noon to 5 pm and 7 pm to 10 pm. The Sunday shows are from noon to 5 pm. Plus, a bonfire will light at sunset on Friday and Saturday.
General admission is $15 with three-day passes for $30 and discounts for children.
Queens County Farm Museum, which has a free parking lot, is located at 73-50 Little Neck Parkway in Glen Oaks.
