#PickoftheWeek | Memorial Day parades in Queens
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Countless Queens residents have made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. For example, more soldiers from Woodside’s zip code — 11377 — died in the Vietnam War than soldiers from any other zip code in the entire country. Plus, the borough is home to more war veterans (about 130,000) than any other borough in New York City right now.
So it’s no surprise that Queens holds the biggest Memorial Day parade in the U.S. – the one in Little Neck-Douglaston. It is one of at least nine marches that will honor the military this weekend. Here’s a list in chronological order with meeting points.
Sunday, May 27
Forest Hills, noon, Metropolitan Avenue and Ascan Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard.
Maspeth, 1 pm, Grand Avenue and 72nd Street.
College Point, 2 pm, College Point Boulevard and Ulmer Street.
Monday, May 28
Laurelton, 9 am, Merrick and Francis Lewis boulevards.
Woodside, 11 am, Woodside Avenue and 57th Street.
Glendale-Ridgewood, 11 am, Myrtle and Cypress avenues.
Howard Beach, 11 am, Coleman Square, 159th Road and 103rd Street.
Rosedale, 11:30 am, 243rd Street and Mayda Road.
Whitestone, noon, 149th Street and 15th Road.
Little Neck-Douglaston, 2 pm, Northern Boulevard and Jayson Avenue.
Editor’s Note: We could not confirm parades in Middle Village and Broad Channel, although they have taken place in those neighborhoods in other years on Mondays. In the past, the Middle Village one has stepped off at 9:30 am at Juniper Valley Road and 80th Street. The Broad Channel one has stepped off at 1 pm at 20-10 Cross Bay Blvd.
