#Newsflash | Queens Concert Series Highlights Female Composers
BY QEDC It's In Queens
There’s an unsung concert series going on in Ridgewood right now.
Extensity: Women Now is celebrating the work of living, female-identifying composers during March at The Box Factory. The events feature concerts, interviews, panels, and receptions.
Violinist Ariel Horowitz, hailed as “sweetly lyrical” by the Washington Post, and pianist Alexa Stier, who won The Mary Erskine School’s super prestigious Silvestri Musical and Academic Scholarship, present Imperfect Momentum, a recital of pieces by Eleanor Alberga, Jennifer Higdon, Errollyn Wallen, and others, on Saturday, March 12, at 7 pm.
Next up is The Future is Female on March 19 at 7 pm. Pianist Sarah Cahill, whom Time Out New York described as “a brilliant and charismatic advocate for modern and contemporary composers,” offers a lecture/recital on such composers as Regina Harris Baiocchi, Tania León, and Mary Watkins. The Future is Female is her project to present a ritual installation and communal feminist immersive listening experience featuring more than 60 compositions by women around the globe, ranging from the 18th century to the present day.
Cello master and Carnegie Hall veteran Christine Lamprea will play the world premiere of “Armadura” by Spanish composer Andrea Casarrubios on March 26 at 7 pm. (The day before, March 25, Casarrubios will share insights into “Armadura” during a virtual Composer Spotlight at 7 pm.)
Located at at 1519 Decatur St., The Box Factory is a large, brick complex with 18-foot ceilings in some spots. It’s about two blocks from the L line’s Halsey Street station.
