BY QEDC It's In Queens

Enjoy a celebration of new programs with talks from artists, activists, and educators.
MoMA PS1 will host an Open House on Saturday, June 3, from noon to 8 pm. The free event promotes an intergenerational storytelling project by the Astoria-based collective Malikah and the launch of Seven Prepared Pianos for the Seven African Powers, a multi-genre installation with the avant-garde musical ensemble Standing On The Corner.
From noon to 4 pm, Malikah members will lead family-friendly fun such as henna tattooing and Egyptian martial arts performances in the Courtyard. The activities will accompany their installation, Homeroom, which weaves together stories of migration and belonging by 12 women from North African communities in Astoria.
A screening of Art21’s new feature on Daniel Lind-Ramos, whose exhibition El Viejo Griot — Una historia de todos nosotros is currently on view, begins at 1:30 pm. A conversation with Art21 Assistant Curator Jurrell Lewis follows.
A symposium on migrant justice featuring a keynote lecture by sociologist Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui is scheduled for 3 pm. Building on the themes of Q’iwanakaxa/Q’iwsanakaxa Utjxiwa, which is currently exhibiting in the double-height, ground-floor gallery, the program will be conducted in Spanish with simultaneous translation in English available.
Q’iwanakaxa/Q’iwsanakaxa Utjxiwa interlaces sound and music with a mural that incorporates personal stories from the artists’ family and the Aymara, an indigenous group that mostly lives in modern day Bolivia. The installation brings together Aymara cosmologies with queer and abolitionist thought through symbolism, oral histories, and exchange.
