BY QEDC It's In Queens
Here’s something for locavores, health fooders, savvy shoppers, farm-to-table proponents, and environmentalists…all others, too.
Queens County Farm Museum is administering pop-up mini-markets in Kew Gardens and Jamaica for the next 21 weeks, weather permitting. Each one sells fresh flowers, fruit, herbs, and vegetables.
The Queens Borough Hall Farmstand operates in front of 120-55 Queens Blvd. from 10 am to 3 pm on Thursdays through Nov. 3.
The Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Farmstand is at the WIC Clinic at 134-20 Jamaica Ave. from 10 am to 3 pm on Fridays through Nov. 4.
Both accept cash, credit, and debit cards along with WIC, FMNP Checks, Health Bucks, and Fresh Connect Checks. They also function as food scrap drop-offs for composting.
Editor’s note: This won’t affect Queens Farm’s on-site green grocery, which is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 am to 3 pm and weekends from 11 am to 5 pm through Nov. 6.
Queens Farm practices regenerative farming methods. A long-time purveyor of such comestibles as eggs, honey, and tomatoes, this year’s crop plan includes 45 new varieties of produce, such as Apollo broccolini, Ping Tung eggplant, Xaldabora mini lettuce heads, Mahon yams, and Honeynut winter squash.
In operation since 1697, Queens Farm is New York City’s largest remaining homestead and only working, undisturbed farm. Alpacas, goats, hens, sheep, and steers are among the animals that live there. The 47-acre property, whose entrance is 73-50 Little Neck Pkwy. in Glen Oaks, also features the Cornell Farmhouse, which dates back to the Adriances, a Dutch family that lived there from 1697 to 1808.
