BY QEDC It's In Queens
Start the day with candy…along with a healthy dose of puppetry, live music, acrobatics, and audience participation.
Flushing Town Hall will present the spellbinding youth play Lollipops for Breakfast twice on Sunday, July 30 — at 11 am and 2 pm — and readers of this article can get 20 percent discounts with the promo code QTC20.
Every growing youngster knows that lollipops are NOT for breakfast, but on this morning, Sylvie decides she’s going to break that golden rule even though she’ll have to create one from scratch. The Gottabbe band plays original live music as Sylvie and her beloved pet bird search for missing ingredients. Without words, the adventure unfolds as they wrestle with giant candy machines and get lost in a magical pop-up cookbook. Then, a tiny Sylvie travels from page to page, gathering color and flavor, and happening upon a candy forest, a ferocious bee, a very slippery ice pond, and a vast mountain range.
The protagonists manage to create a perfect lollipop, but they also get a lesson in overcoming obstacles and trying again after failing. However, their friendship is put to a test as neither one wants to share it.
Silvie is played by Bonnie Duncan, who has been blending puppetry, dance, and physical theater for 15 years, including an eight-year run with Snappy Dance Theater. The Gottabees started creating family-friendly theater with Squirrel Stole My Underpants in 2013. Lollipops for Breakfast, which was created in 2015, is the group’s second work.
Duncan and the Gottabees recently won the 2017 UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence, the highest honor in American puppetry.
