#InTheLoop | Hot Pink + Other Bright Colors Abound in Western Queens
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Art has popped up in Western Queens.
Part of the LIC (Re) Connects program, the public pieces enliven streets and welcome visitors to Long Island City.
Urban artist and graphic designer Queen Andrea’s piece, Floral Festivity beautifies a large construction fence at 27-01 Jackson Ave. The 760-foot, multi-panel mural features fiery floral designs and bright flowing shapes, converting an eyesore into an energizing backdrop.
Another urban artist, No Cap, created Unity & Diversity with input from students at LaGuardia Community College. This large-scale mural, which boasts a colorful and dynamic intertwining pattern, adorns the Thomson Avenue Bridge Overpass.
Consisting of magenta structures and sidewalk signs, The Ribbon playfully zigzags through the One Court Square Plaza area, breaking down social barriers and connecting people. The structures include kinetic pieces that rotate, reflecting the surrounding context and revealing different LIC Love Notes submitted by residents and visitors.
Become part of the fun by submitting an LIC Love Note here or look for the QR code at each piece.
As part of The Ribbon, digital artist Alexis Zerafa used AR technology to create Dichroic Vessels, an Instagram filter that lets participants activate iridescent vessels floating in the space and share with their followers on social media.
LIC (Re) Connects will be on display through Sept. 30, 2022.
The Long Island City Partnership commissioned the projects in collaboration with The Urban Conga, an NYC-based design studio; LIC-based Boyce Technologies, Hive Public Space, a woman-led urban design and placemaking studio; Lions Group; Janovic, NYC DOT Art Program; and NYC Parks.
