#InTheLoop | Got Talent? Submit Art to Local Venues!
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Ask not what the Queens art scene can do for you, but what you can do for the Queens art scene.
Locals have some great opportunities to display their talent these days, regardless of whether the preceding quote by President John F. Kennedy Jr. is accurate.
The first relates to Philip von Zweck’s Temporary Allegiance project at Maspeth’s Knockdown Center. It’s an ongoing open call to make and submit flags for the 40-foot flagpole near the entrance at 52-19 Flushing Ave.
The banners can be any shape and any size smaller than eight-feet-by-12-feet, provided that they are safe, durable, and attachable at two points, three feet apart. They can be of any material and contain mascots, military emblems, national seals, propaganda, and warning signals, among other icons.
Each winner will fly for at least two weeks. Drop off submissions on Thursdays and Fridays from 2 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 7 pm.
Von Zweck is a multi-disciplinary artist and curator. He began Temporary Allegiance at the University of Illinois Chicago, but then moved it to Maspeth. The term refers to how non-citizens must obey local laws while visiting a foreign country.
The Knockdown Center consists of a 50,000 square-foot, multi-use building with sky-high ceilings near the Brooklyn border. The closest subway station is the L train’s Jefferson Street stop.
Annual Exhibition
Bayside Historical Society is seeking local talent for its 22nd annual Winter Art Show.

The 2023 Winter Art Show will run the entire month of February virtually on the BHS website and live at stores in The Bay Terrace Shopping Center. The hanging fee is $15 per work.
Oratorio Society of Queens
The Oratorio Society of Queens will hold Open Auditions at Temple Beth Sholom, 172nd Street and Northern Boulevard in Flushing, on Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 at 7:30 pm.
Established in 1927, OSQ is the borough’s oldest performing cultural organization. Consisting of about 100 singers and an ensemble, the group’s big annual events are a pre-Christmas show and a spring concert. Its most common performance venues are the Queensborough Performing Arts Center in Bayside, Our Lady Queens of Martyrs Church in Forest Hills, and St. Kevin’s Church in Flushing.
