#PickoftheWeek | Kermit forever! Permanent Jim Henson exhibition opens on July 22
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Hang out with stars from The Muppet Show and Sesame Street.
A permanent exhibition that explores Jim Henson and his impact on film, television, and popular culture will open at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District on Saturday, July 22.
Housed in a new gallery space, the expo features almost 300 objects, including 47 puppets—Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, The Swedish Chef, Statler, Waldorf, Big Bird, Elmo, and countless others—character sketches, storyboards, scripts, photographs, and costumes.
Visitors will explore how Henson and his team created the pieces via behind-the-scenes footage presented on more than 27 monitors and projections. They will also get to try their hand at puppet making and designing with interactive exhibits. Plus, many screenings, educations programs, live appearances, and family programs are planned.
A partial film schedule for the opening weeks follows.
The Muppet Movie on July 21 at 2:30 pm and 5 pm; July 22 at 2 pm; and July 23 at 2 pm.
The Great Muppet Caper on July 22 at 4 pm and July 23 at 4 pm.
The Muppets Take Manhattan on July 22 at 6 pm and July 23 at 6 pm.
Labyrinth on July 28 at 7 pm and July 30 at 2 pm and 6:30 pm.
The Dark Crystal on July 29 at 2 pm and July 30 at 4:30 pm.
Over a roughly 30-year career, Henson wore many hats — puppet maker, screenwriter, director, producer, entrepreneur, artist, and even inventor—on his way to being inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame and being declared a Disney Legend. The Mississippi native got his first taste of fame via Sesame Street in the 1960s.
