Also known as “African-American Holiness Pentecostal Music,” Sacred Steel is a purely American genre that mixes rock with gospel. It grew out of Pentecostal churches in the early 1900s when the wail of electric steel guitars started joining and replacing organs during worship services.
Together for about two decades, the Campbells – Chuck on pedal steel guitar, Phillip on electric guitar and bass, Darick on lap steel guitar, and Carlton on drums – present a particularly rich, high-energy form of this genre with growling, shouting, singing, swinging, and wailing by the musicians and their instruments. (Chuck can make his guitar sound human.)
And on this night, Katie Jackson will add her classic, gutsy gospel vocals.
The event will include an interactive and extremely rocking workshop, entitled “Rhythmic and Stylistic Influences in Sacred Steel Music,” at 7 pm. Participants will learn historical perspectives on common rhythmic figures and stylistic influences within Sacred Steel music. Of course, demonstrations will be songs, and the audience will be able to join in.
