#WeeklyPick | Authentic, traditional Fairy Tale in Flushing
BY QEDC It's In Queens
These performers really live up to their name.
Fairy Tale, an ensemble inspired by time-honored Korean creativity, will present a unique dramatic experience at Flushing Town Hall on Friday, Dec. 1, at 8 pm.
The audience will be enthralled by a transformative blend of traditional art forms with modern Korean pop culture. Attendees will hear music inspired by folk stories and healing messages laced with the sentimental feelings of Korean poems. Plus, the musicians will play traditional instruments such as daegeum (bamboo flute by Seo Youseok), haegeum (fiddle by Ko Yunjin), and geomungo (folk zither by Choi Jinyoung), as well as piano (by Oh Youngjin), and percussion (by Kim Kyuyoun). Jang Myeongseo, whose voice effortlessly conveys emotion and rhythm, will present jeongga, one of the great Korean vocal genres.
Tickets are $16, but students only pay $10, and teenagers can attend for free.
Formed in 2011, Fairy Tale has released three albums. The Flushing Town Hall gig is the group’s first concert on a seven-day North American tour that includes stops in Tenafly, NJ (Dec. 2), Stony Brook, NY (Dec. 3), Washington, DC (Dec. 5), and Los Angeles (Dec. 7).
