Love is Dead (which is a play) starts a long run in Queens this week. Expect this emotion to revive with tremendous Taiwanese music, clay sculpture, full-moon drumming, a Grandparents’ Day celebration, and performance art with a rotating cast of four performers, different each night, who negotiate a new script at each show.
Sept. 7, Trumpet Virtuoso Alphonso Horne, 6:30 pm. This two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter has performed with such renowned artists as Wynton Marsalis and Rihanna. Free. Queens Central Library, 89-11 Merrick Blvd., Jamaica.
Sept. 7, Love is Dead, Sept. 23. Murder, deceit, and sexism. This play’s many twists and turns make the audience wonder whether the title holds true. Shows at 8 pm with Wednesday-Sunday cycle. The Secret Theatre, 44-02 23rd St., LIC.
Sept. 8, Enchanted Formosa, 7:30 pm. With songs from Taiwanese indigenous tribes, Hoklo groups, and Hakka villages, singer-songwriter Yu-Wei Hsieh offers a spectacular concert the combines folk, pop, and alt-rock. Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd.
Sept. 9, Clay Sculpture, noon. Noguchi Museum’s Harumi Ori leads a workshop on sculpting with clay. Find natural materials on site and embrace the earth while creating an entirely organic sculpture. Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Blvd., LIC.
Sept. 9, Island of Lost Souls: A History of Madness and Medicine on Roosevelt Island, 6 pm. This two-hour guided tour elaborates on the macabre medical history of the asylums on this neighboring island. More information: Andrea Janes at andrea@boroughsofthedead.com and 917-409-8533.
Sept 10, Poetry Reading, 3 pm. David Mills reads from his poetry collection, “Talking to the Bones,” inspired by the country’s oldest and largest slave cemetery, which is located in Manhattan. Sept. 10, New Play Reading, 2 pm. The first ever public reading of Evangelia Kingsley’s two-act play Simple Gifts, which explores extinction via an octogenarian ex-Metropolitan Opera diva and singing teacher with a fictional Shaker village in Indiana as a backdrop.
