Snow is the talk of the town, but it’s also raining fun events in Queens. The world’s most diverse borough hosts concerts, dance presentations, art showcases, Mexican weddings, tree house shakers, astronomy, and a bit of witchcraft.
March 17 + 18, Take Root, 8 pm. The troupe mishiDance explores the experience of commuting. Sans Limites Dance grapples with gravity: fighting it; giving into it; becoming overpowered by it; and re-emerging from it. $15. Green Space, 37-24 24th St., LIC.
March 17, The Pink Underground Artist Showcase, 6 pm. Comedian Kim Fowler leads a night of live music, body paint exhibitions, Neo Soul, food, poetry, wine, and underground creativity. $10. Nelema’s Spa, 160-01 Jamaica Ave., Jamaica.
March 18, Boda Mexicana, 8 pm (and March 19 at 3 pm). Calpulli Mexican Dance tells a story of two people as expressed by different ethnic groups, eras, and traditions. $25. Queens Theatre, 14 United Nations Ave. S., Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
March 18, Treehouse Shakers: Olive & Pearl, 11 am + 2:15 pm. A puppetry performance about a young girl being lovingly raised by her granny. Audiences sit in the home, which consists of soft felts, crocheted squares, and colorful fabrics. Workshops at 10:15 am + 1:30 pm with puppet-making with household objects, storytelling, creative drama based on folktales, finger tales, and poetry of home. $7/$4 for children. March 18, Wine, Women and Song, 8:30 pm (and March 19 at 3 pm). A musical tribute to women consisting of popular songwriters from the 1920s through the 1950s. $22/$20 for children and seniors. Theatre by the Bay, 13-00 209th St., Bayside.
March 18, Nocturnal Hike, 7 pm. Stroll with Urban Park Rangers and observe birds in Willow Lake. Free. Meet at Albert H. Mauro Playground, Park Drive East and 73rd Avenue Terrace, Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
March 18, Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, 3 pm. A 2011 survey by the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10 percent of its contributors identify as female. During this event, volunteers update Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, 161-04 Jamaica Ave.
March 18, Cinema Saturdays, 1 pm. Watch a 1947 Charlie Chaplin film that won an Oscar for best original screenplay. In Monsieur Verdoux, a suave-but-cynical man supports his family by marrying and murdering rich women for their money. However, the job has some occupational hazards. Free. March 18, Stargazing Astronomy, 7:30 pm. Professor Mark Freilich starts with a Q&A on basic astronomy, followed by outdoor viewing with a professional telescope. Participants can bring telescopes and binoculars. $15. Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd., Douglaston.
March 19, Billy Porter, 3 pm. Tony-winning Broadway star Billy Porter is a singer, composer, actor, playwright, and director. His resume includes stints with Kinky Boots, Miss Saigon, Grease, and Dreamgirls. On this night, he does songs from these roles and tributes to artists who inspire him. $42 + $35. March 19, Susana Baca & Nano Stern, 3 pm. Baca is an Afro-Peruvian musical legend who sings protest and romantic songs. Stern is a rising star who prefers traditional Chilean music. $30-$50. LeFrak Concert Hall, Queens College, 65-30 Kissena Blvd., Flushing.
March 19, UN Earth Day, 1 pm. Organized by the United Nations Association’s Queens Chapter, the program includes a panel discussion and audience dialogue. Topics include government actions that harm the environment, drinking water, bird habitats, poetry, songs, and light refreshments. Queens Museum, NYC Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
March 19, The Devil in New York: The Witchcraft Trial of Goody Garlick, 2 pm. Stony Brook University’s Tara Rider discusses witchcraft hysteria in 17th century New York. Free, but registration is required. King Manor Museum, 150-03 Jamaica Ave.
March 19, Fertile Ground, 7 pm. This monthly new works showcase features five or six choreographers and a post-performance discussion with wine and cheese. $12. Green Space, 37-24 24th St., LIC.
March 19, Guided Tour, 1 pm. An expert explains Self-Interned, 1942: Noguchi in Poston War Relocation Center. This special exhibition marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which sent Japanese citizens and Japanese-American citizens to internment camps. Free. Noguchi Museum, 9-01 33rd Rd., LIC.
