#PickoftheWeek | Spring Break program is fun, family-friendly, and informative
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Spring break is actually a bit complicated as it includes family time, fun time, enrichment time, and killing time.
Luckily, the Museum of the Moving Image will be a one-stop shop for vacationers, thanks to its Spring Recess Program, which is set to run from Friday, March 30, through Sunday, April 8.
The Astoria cultural institution will screen Jim Henson’s Tale of the Bunny Picnic on each day at 11 am. At the same time, the nonprofit will facilitate a Springtime Puppet Studio. Plus, The Muppets Take Manhattan will show at 1 pm on every afternoon except March 31, April 7, and April 8.
The 1986 Picnic film is a heartwarming tale about bullying, overcoming fear, and the fact that great things come in small packages. In the beginning, all the Muppet bunnies are happy as they prepare their annual picnic, except Bean, whose siblings bully and tease him for being small and getting in their way. Their attitude changes drastically after a dog attacks the festivities, and Bean saves the day.
The 1984 Manhattan flick follows a Muppet band that produces a hit song and ends up on Broadway. (Ed Koch, who was NYC Mayor at the time, makes a cameo.) The plot thickens when Kermit the Frog marries Miss Piggy, but it’s not clear if the wedding is show business or real life.
Themes from Picnic and Manhattan combine at the Puppet Studio, where families can perform puppet karaoke, create origami characters, organize picnics, and color their favorite characters.
