#PickoftheWeek | Dance company presents ‘Navidad: A Mexican-American Christmas’ at two Queens venues
BY QEDC It's In Queens
There’s some brand new, multi-cultural choreography in the borough, and two venues are promoting it.
Calpulli Mexican Dance Company offers “Navidad: A Mexican-American Christmas” at Thalía Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside from Friday, Nov. 30, to Sunday, Dec. 16.
With 16 dancers and various musicians, this production celebrates holiday traditions – from Aztec-inspired movement to Christmas carols — through an NYC youth whose parents are from Mexico. In a dream, Mariachi music mixes with Tchaikovsky, while folk dance fuses with ballet. To add spice, a tempting character preaches the separation of these customs, and the youngster must choose.
The shows run on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 4 pm at Thalía, which is at 41-17 Greenpoint Ave. Tickets run from $37 to $45 with special group rates.
While at Thalía, Calpulli will also offer a special presentation of “Navidad: A Mexican-American Christmas” at Queens Botanical Garden on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 pm. This version will feature segments from the show, a discussion about the story, and interactive movement workshops.
Admission prices are $10 for adults, $8 for children ages 4 through 12, and free for children 3 and under. Queens Botanical Garden is at 43-50 Main St. in Flushing.
