Starting on June 3:
The housing crisis is about to take center stage in Sunnyside.
Thalía Spanish Theatre presents the bilingual United States premiere of Apartment for Sale (Tenant Included) or Se Vende Piso (con Inquilino) for four weeks, starting on June 3. Tickets are $25 each, and the English performances are on Fridays at 8 pm and Saturdays at 3 pm. The Spanish version runs on Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 4 pm.
Apartment for Sale is a hilarious comedy that explores human relations, living space, and quality of life. Three peculiar characters – an old woman who is stuck in her ways, a young businesswoman who has everything she wants, and a real estate agent whose life is a total disaster – make the audience laugh, cry, and sit on the edge of their seats for the whole ride.
The play tells the story of a “good girl” with a great job, a fantastic group of friends, and a huge apartment that she got for a song. However, there’s one hitch. The deed stipulates that the owner, a senior citizen with nothing left in her life, can legally live in the apartment until she dies. Then possession goes to the good girl.
The plot is actually based on a real life event that happened to the playwright, Juan Carlos Rubio, when he responded to a newspaper advertisement in his native Spain. He turned down the offer for the apartment and the tenant, but the experience inspired him to write the play, which features a surprise ending.
