#PickoftheWeek | Circus amazes at Citi Field
BY Michael Gillen
This troupe is out of this world…and from all over the world, too.
Circo Hermanos Vazquez, whose roots trace back to a Mexican ranch in the early 20th century, is currently amazing crowds inside big-top tents in the Citi Field parking lot with a menagerie of well-behaved animals, a rocking in-house band, and a crew of wacky-but-über-talented showpeople. (Shows run until Dec. 4.)
Arturo Figueroa, a dwarf from Mexico, is the master of ceremonies. He adds spice to each act with wisecracks and funny antics. This year, he mixes it up with Grupo Bingo, a Ukrainian cast of acrobats, dancers, and monocycle riders; Mexican juggler Luva Vazquez, who likes to groove to music while on stage; Pompeyo, uncanny dog trainers from Colombia; three Chilean clowns who get into trouble under the name Los Cayuga; and Klaus-Dieter, a German who gets horses to do the craziest things without losing their noble stature.
Other artists include Lexa Vazquez Atayde (Mexico) and her ability to jump through hoops, romantic dancing acrobats Mikhail and Anastasia (Ukraine), and rapid-fire juggler Jose Alberto Vazquez (Mexico).
