#InTheLoop | The Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema Is Back!
BY QEDC It's In Queens
It’s a win-win situation with Hollywood flair. Enjoy features, web series, and music videos while also supporting the local independent film scene.
The second annual Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema will screen movies at two locations — Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, and United Artists Midway 9 at 108-22 Queens Blvd. in Forest Hills — from Friday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 12.
In total, 110 films — selected from a pool of more than 350 submissions — will show. They hail from 23 countries, including Australia, France, South Africa, and Turkey. They are organized into roughly two-hour thematic blocks in such categories as Animation, Documentary, Experimental, Narrative, and Shorts.
Free workshops, presentations, and talks, too.
Jayson Simba, the founder and main organizer, informed that about 3,000 people attended the inaugural festival in 2017. He expects at least 4,000 movie buffs this year.
The first scheduled event is A Midsummer Night’s Feast, a kick-off party with more than 30 local vendors, at Queens Museum on July 31 at 6 pm.
The film fun begins with the New York Premiere of “The Song of Sway Lake,” starring Rory Culkin at Midway 9 on Aug. 3 at 6:30 pm.
A red carpet bash with screenings on Aug. 11 and an awards ceremony on Aug. 12 at Terrace on the Park are the final events.

Editor’s note: Yes, nothing will show in Kew Gardens this year. (It’s a long story.) But the After Parties, Drunken Trivia Night, Karaoke Night, and a few networking events will take place in the festival’s namesake neighborhood.
