Camp Rockaway will host overnight visitors in safari-style canvas tents in the Art Deco Jacob Riis Park Bathhouse’s courtyard from Sunday, July 1, through Wednesday, Oct. 31.
The family-friendly site includes a communal fire pit, a picnic-and-grill area, hammocks, a supply store, a bathroom facility, a Palapa, and games such as horseshoes. It’s located a few steps from the Atlantic Ocean and a stone’s throw from Fort Tilden and part of the Gateway Recreation Area of New York and New Jersey.
The man behind the concept, Kent Johnson, says that he was inspired by the idea that people could take a subway or bus to enjoy a weekend at the beach…while never leaving the city limits. The architect also sees Camp Rockaway as a base for those who want to fish, hike, surf, jet ski, ride bicycles, watch whales, paddleboard, take nature walks, and even play golf. There are also food and shopping options at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar and culture at the Rockaway Artists Alliance.
“Camp Rockaway was born out of my desire to prolong the beach day, and experience the quieter times by the ocean,” says Johnson, an avid surfer who found early mornings and late evenings the best time to experience the peninsula. “Around the turn of the century, people would come out and stay in lavish hotels, bungalows or these rows of canvas tents right on the beach. The tents were perfect — I knew it was where I would want to stay.”
