#PickoftheWeek | The Beach Dance Sessions Series Is in Rockaway on Aug. 17

Editor’s note: Due to bad weather, this performance was re-scheduled to Monday, Sept. 2, at 6 pm.

Work on your tan and take in some culture at the same time.

The Beach Sessions Dance Series is on the sand between Beach 106th Street and the Rockaway shoreline on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 pm.

Now in its 10th year, this show is live, outdoors, free, and enhanced by breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. Faye Driscoll – whose trophy case includes a Doris Duke Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Bessie Award, and the Jacob’s Pillow Artist Award – has choreographed a site-specific performance. A large cast will create a multisensory scene while grooving within the dunes, rocks, sand, and water.

Rockaway resident Sasha Okshteyn founded Beach Sessions Dance Series to bring dancers to Rockaway (and Rockaway to dancers) in 2015. This year’s effort is co-produced by Morgan Griffin, who is also a professional choreographer and dancer.

“As the series has grown in scale and notoriety over the past decade, Beach Sessions has continued to stay true to its original mission of extending the boundaries of live performance and nurturing critical discussions about dance and its role in contemporary art and the environment,” stated Okshteyn.

The scheduled dancers are James Barrett, Kara Brody, Leslie Cuyjet, Kaijo Caggins, Miguel Alejandro Castillo, Lena Engelstein, Neva Guido, David Guzman, Maya LaLiberte, Mor Mendel, Marie Lloyd Paspe, Katrina Reid, Cory Seals, Carlo Antonio Villanueva, Jo Warren, and Devika Wickremesinghe. Amy Gernux is the choreographic assistant, while Dages Juvelier Keates is the dramaturg and Karen Boyer is in charge of costumes and props.
