#PickoftheWeek | QEDC’s 2024 Calendar Is Hot off the Press!

The Queens Economic Development Corporation invites you to the World’s Fair!

With the title “It’s 2024, but we’re going to party like it’s 1964,” QEDC’s new calendar features one event photo for each month with informational captions. It’s beautiful. It’s educational. It’s a great housewarming or birthday gift.

And it’s free…as long as supplies last.

To get a copy, contact Rob MacKay — [email protected] — or send him a stamped, self-addressed envelope at QEDC, 120-55 Queens Blvd., Ste. 309, Kew Gardens, NY 11424.

Calendar owners will learn about the following: Astral Fountain, Chrysler Corporation Pavilion, Electric Power & Light Pavilion, Ford Magic Skyway Show, General Electric’s Progressland, General Motors Pavilion, Indonesia Pavilion, New York State Pavilion, Port Authority Heliport, Rocket Thrower, Spacepark, Swiss Sky Ride, and of course, the Unisphere, which still stands today and is the borough’s most recognized structure.

Before the internet, World Fairs were the only way to introduce new inventions and celebrate life on a large scale. They took place periodically in cities all around the world. The 1964 one was in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Among other items, Belgian Waffles, Disney Animatronics, the Ford Mustang, push-button telephones, and videoconferencing debuted there.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park also hosted the 1939 World’s Fair.
