#MonthlyPicks | What Does a College Student Love about Queens? Read on for a Little Education.

Malachy Cashman is a proud Jackson Heights resident who frequently attends local events such as Queens Taste. The UAlbany junior knows some great places to park near LaGuardia Airport, but don’t expect him to share those secrets. Instead, he’ll share some of his favorite things about the World’s Borough.

Good Eats

Pio Pio is probably my favorite. The chicken is great, but we really like the green sauce. We don’t get a small container … We get a tub because you can eat it with your eggs for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and most dinner entrees. (Editor’s note: Pio Pio has branches in Jackson Heights and Rego Park.)

I also like F. Ottomanelli’s Burgers and Belgian Fries in Woodside. The burgers are a “10.”

Wander Streets

Roosevelt Avenue under the 7 train is always exciting as you can see so much in such a short distance. There are some great restaurants and stores there, too.

When the weather is warm, I like to wander around Hunter’s Point Park South in Long Island City. The view of Midtown Manhattan is fantastic, and exploring the open space is relaxing.

Historic Feats

I live in the Jackson Heights Historic District. The red brick houses are charming and well-kept. It’s a cool aesthetic.

I’m also proud of the famous people who have lived in Queens, such as Malcolm X. I’ve been to his old house in East Elmhurst with my buddy Sarika.

Unique Treats

All of New York City is diverse, but Queens takes the cake. Walking in some neighborhoods is like traveling to other parts of the world. Plus, all the cultures here are authentic.
