The Kofago Dance Ensemble presents a Seventh Annual Kwanzaa Celebration at Bayside’s Queensborough Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 pm.

This year’s theme is “Obumu,” which translates from an East African language as “Unity,” and the performances and storytelling emphasize strength, togetherness, and the principles of Kwanzaa.

Prices run from $10 to $25, and there’s also a youth showcase at noon.

Presented in partnership with Rhythm N Dance Incorporated, this celebration showcases choreography by Kofago principal member Bakary Fall. Originally from Senegal, he’s known for blending traditional and contemporary West African dance. Madina Nalwanga, a Ugandan actress who played Phiona Mutesi in the 2016 Disney film Queen of Katwe, is another featured performer.

“Kwanzaa is a time to honor the principles that define our community, and ‘Obumu’ resonates deeply as it reflects our vision of uniting hearts and minds through cultural celebration,” stated Kofago Founder Kevin McEwen. “We are thrilled to celebrate with Madina and Bakary, whose artistry and commitment to community amplify our message of Unity in a powerful way.”

Founded in 2015, Kofago is dedicated to the preservation and evolution of African and African diaspora dance. The title word is a blend of “Sankofa,” a Twi word that means “to retreive,” and “Shango,” the Yoruba god of thunder, drumming, dancing, fire, and male virility.

QPAC is located at 222-05 56th Ave. on Queensborough Community College’s campus.
