Developed in Argentina’s hyper macho Pampas during the 19th century, Malambo is male dance with battle undertones. Men prove their athleticism, talent, and vigor via complicated foot movements called “mudanzas” in a small space. Drums, guitars, and hand claps provide the background music as dancers gyrate and groove.
Feel the passion and revel in the art during Malevo! at Queensborough Performing Arts Center in Bayside on Sunday, May 17, at 3 pm.
Direct from Argentina, this all-male group elevates Malambo traditions with urban percussion, dance, strength, dexterity, and agility mixed with elements of Flamenco, Tango and Irish stepdance. The members work together more than they compete against each other, and a live band accompanies the spectacle.
Ticket prices runs from $38 to $63.
Creeated by director, choreographer, and dancer Matías Jaime, Malevo is an official, government-approved Cultural Ambassador to the National Identity of Argentina. The troupe recently had a year-long residency at Universal Studios Japan and made it to the semi-finals on America’s Got Talent.
Located at 222-05 56th Ave. on Queensborough Community College’s campus, QPAC has an 875-seat proscenium theater. It’s not near many public transportation options, but a large parking lot is nearby.
