Modern dance often leaves audiences asking the question: But what does it mean?
Well, this show creates its own meaning, asking audiences to leave their imaginations at the door and enter a world where gravity is nothing and creativity is everything. Then, the storytelling resembles a dream.
Pilobolus presents re: Creation three times at Queens Theatre.
Almost two hours long, this production mixes myths with colorful costumes, simple props, minimalist music, eerie lighting, and — let’s be honest – the dancers’ ripped muscles. As they flutter around stage, they seem to defy gravity with athletic moves and multi-person balancing acts.
Ticket prices run from $32 to $42, and shows are Feb. 8 at 2 pm and 8 pm and Feb. 9 at 2 pm. The first one has American Sign Language interpretation and a post-show talk-back. The second one is audio described.
Founded at New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College in 1971, Pilobolus has created more than 120 pieces and performed in more than 65 countries. The rebellious troupe, which is currently based in Connecticut, received a 2012 Grammy nomination. It’s won a Primetime Emmy, a TED Fellowship, and several Cannes Lion Awards. (The name translates from Greek as “Thrown Hat.”)
Queens Theatre is located at 14 United Nations Ave. S. inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Several free parking lots are nearby, and the closest subway station is Mets-Willets Point on the 7 line.
