#InTheLoop | Five Weeks of Tango and Candombe in Queens

In terms of national soccer teams, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay are bitter rivals. But these three South American countries share borders, cultures, and histories. Not only do they like each other, but they feed off each other.

Enjoy some of their greatest combined efforts during Tango & Candombe at Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside from Friday, May 31, to Sunday, June 30.

Candombe is a genre of music and dance that surged among slaves and their liberated descendants in Uruguay. It’s also popular in parts of Argentina and Brazil — and Paraguay, too, to be honest! The base comes from the chico, repique, and piano drums and carnivals in the countries almost always feature at least one Candombe parade (or llamada).

Tango is also a style of music and dance, although it involves partners. It originates from both sides of the Río de la Plata (or River Plate), which separates Argentina from Uruguay.

Both genres have been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Located at 41-17 Greenpoint Ave. in Sunnyside, Thalía’s performance space has about 75 seats. The 8 pm shows are on Fridays and Saturdays, the 3 pm shows are on Saturdays, and the 4 pm shows are on Sundays.

General admission is $50, but students and seniors can attend for $45. Plus, there are special group rates.

Editor’s note: There’s a BOGO offer for the show on June 1 at 3 pm. Call 718-729-3880 to get it.
