#InTheLoop | Drama Queens? Five Plays Open Soon at Borough Theaters

Oh the drama. We have comedia in Sunnyside, hatted cats in Woodside, show tunes in Middle Village, religion (kinda, sorta) in Jamaica Estates, and Shakespeare (kinda, sorta) down in Rockaway.

Let’s start at the northwestern most venue. Las Mujeres Lo Hacemos Mejor Que Los Hombres (Women Do It Better Than Men) is at Thalia Spanish Theatre (41-17 Greenpoint Ave.) from Sept. 13 to Oct. 6.

Award-winning actress Soledad Lopez plays an attractive psychologist who leads a workshop on professional growth in Roberto Ramos Perea’s play. While exploring her own relationships — in Spanish with English supertitles — she analyzes marriage, divorce, seduction, and love after age 50.

General admission is $35, but $32 for students and seniors. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 4 pm.

Not far away at 38-02 61st St., The Secret Theatre hosts Seussical Jr. The Musical from Sept. 27 to Oct. 5.

Members of the venue’s acting academy transport audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, as the Cat in the Hat narrates the classic Dr. Seuss story “Horton the Elephant.” After Horton discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called “Whos,” he must protect them from a world of naysayers and dangers. All the while, he must guard an abandoned egg left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.

Ticket prices run from $15 to $27, and the show goes on at 7 pm on Sept. 27, 28 and Oct. 5, 6 with matinees on Sept. 29 at 1 pm and Oct. 5 at 3 pm and 7 pm.

Head a bit south, and Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein is at Maggie’s Little Theater from Sept. 28 to Oct. 6.

Presented via an arrangement with Concord Theatricals, this music revue is true to its name: it features classics by prolific lyricists Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

Maggie’s Little Theater is part of St. Margaret’s Parish at 66-11 79th Pl. Seating is reserved, and prices run from $25 for adults to $22 for seniors and children under age 12. Catch the vibe on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 at  8 pm, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 at 2:30 pm, and Oct. 4 at 8 pm.

From there go a bit further east for Nunsense: The Mega Musical at The Mary Louis Academy (176-21 Wexford Terrace) from Sept. 14 to Sept. 22.

Royal Star Theatre presents this cabaret show about Little Sisters of Hoboken members who say the sassiest things amid song, dance, and zany antics.

General admission is $20, but children (under 12) and seniors (over 65) can attend for $17. Here’s the schedule: Sept. 14, 8 pm; Sept. 15, 3 pm; Sept. 20, 8 pm; Sept. 21, 8 pm; and Sept. 22, 3 pm.

Then, head due south to catch Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood at Rockaway Theatre Company from Sept. 20 to Oct. 6.

Presented via an arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French Inc., this romantic comedy reimagines the Bard of Avon’s creative process as he writes “Romeo and Juliet.”

General admission is $20, but children and seniors can attend for $15. Showtimes are 8 pm on Sept. 20, 21, 27, and 28, Oct. 4 and 5 with matinees at 2 pm on Sept. 22, 29, and Oct. 6.

Founded in 1997, Rockaway Theatre Company presents in the John Gilleece Theater, a renovated space that was once a cinema for United States Army personnel at Fort Tilden. The address is Fort Tilden’s Post Theatre (Building T4) in Breezy Point.
