#PickoftheWeek | Welcome the Year of the Snake with the Nai-Ni Chan Dance Company in Queens this Weekend

Intuition, transformation, and wisdom are the main buzzwords of the approaching Year of the Snake. Celebrate this spirit with colorful costumes, graceful movement, and maybe even a dragon or two.

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company offers two shows at Queens College’s Goldstein Theatre this weekend.

Consider it a “vibrant weave” as performers bring ancient choreography and traditions to life on stage. Those majestic dragons will interact with prancing lions, elegant peacocks, and some stunning acrobats. The Coinstick Dance, Spear Dance, Way of Fire, and Whirlwind are on the schedule.

Both of the roughly 65-minute performances are at 3 pm with the first one on Jan. 25 and the second on Jan. 26. Tickets cost $20.

Founded by Taiwan native Nai-Ni Chen in 1988, the New Jersey-based troupe fuses the creativity and energy of American modern dance with the grace and discipline of Asian art. It has received more than 20 awards from such entities as the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Goldstein Theatre is on Queens College’s campus with an entrance at 153-49 Reeves Ave. in Flushing. There are a few free parking lots in the general vicinity.

Editor’s note: Nai-Ni Chen programs are conducted in wheelchair accessible spaces and organizers will provide such services as sign language interpreting, audio description, and open captioning upon request. (Please give at least 10 business days notice.)
