With 165 acres of trees, a 110-acre golf course, bridle paths, hiking trails, and a series of small hills, Forest Park is an urban gem. But maintaining the delicate natural balance is a gargantuan task.
Seize a rare opportunity to learn the story behind the flora and fauna at a Forest Park Greenhouse Open House on Saturday, May 11, from 9 am to 2 pm.
Staffers grow more than 200,000 annuals and perennials through various propagation methods there. Then, they use the products to beautify beaches, parks, playgrounds, and pools throughout Queens and Brooklyn. (Each year, gardeners hold a meeting to decide which species to cultivate.)
Admission is free, and reservations are not required. In case of large crowds, groups will be limited and staggered.
The greenhouse has served the NYC Parks Department for more than 100 years, but much of the complex has been renovated recently. A computerized system controls the light, temperature, and humidity where the plants are grown.
The greenhouse’s address is 88-51 Forest Park Dr. inside the park. It’s near the skate park and the motor vehicle entrance at Myrtle Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard. There are a few parking lots nearby.
Via public transportation, the best options are the J train to the Jamaica Avenue station and the SBS 52 or SBS 53 bus to Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive.
