Yes, it’s inspired by Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade. However, the Rockaway ritual is family-friendly, and the focus is on artist expression and creativity.
The tenth annual Poseidon’s Parade is on Saturday, Sept. 21, starting at 1 pm.
All are invited to put on a costume and march. After kicking off at Beach 105th Street on the boardwalk, the route heads straight to 95th Street for an award ceremony for the best outfits and an after party with dancing and general fun.
Individual tickets are $7, while floats, which must be human-powered, cost $40.
Organized by the Rockaway Mermaid Bridage, a merry band of artists and enthusiasts, the procession usually attracts a healthy number of mermaids, sailors, and other glittery sea critters. Families and couples often coordinate costumes, and special guests are everywhere.
In Greek mythology, Poseidon is one of the Twelve Olympians (or Titans). With his trusty trident always at the ready, he presides over the sea and protects seafarers, among other tasks. His Roman equivalent is Neptune. (The Mermaid Parade takes place a block away from Neptune Avenue in Coney Island.)
