Isaac Mizrahi is a clothing designer who has conquered the fashion world with his Xcel Brands. But the multi-talented Brooklyn native has also had considerable success in the entertainment industry as an actor, host, performer, producer, singer, and writer.
Experience his entertainment side – although he will certainly dress well, too – during An Evening with Isaac Mizrahi at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 30, at 8 pm.
Accompanied by his Jazz band, Mizrahi will perform favorites from the American songbook and Broadway showtunes, but he will also share monologues and skits as part of a new genre of entertainment that fuses performance art, music, and stand-up comedy.
Ticket prices run $43 to $68.
Born in 1961, Mizrahi grew up in a largely Syrian Jewish community in Midwood. His father, Zeke, was in the children’s clothing industry, and he started sewing as a youngster. At 15, he launched his first fashion label, IS New York, with a focus on colorful and stylish designs along with clean and refined shapes to create bold and confident images. Business boomed after a trunk show at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan in 1987.
Then, while collaborating with such brands as Louis Vuitton, Bloomingdale’s and Claiborn, Mizrahi was also making appearances on television programs, movies, plays, game shows, festivals, and fashion specials. Sometimes he acted. Sometimes he sang. Sometimes he did the voice over. Sometimes he designed the costumes.
Always busy, Mizrahi has an annual residency at Café Carlyle in New York City these days. He just played Amos Hart in the Broadway production of Chicago.
