Hollywood goes Queens for a day.
New York on Location is set for Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District on Sunday, Sept. 15, from noon to 4 pm.
This free, family-friendly event offers a behind-the-scenes look at film and TV production. Attendees can go inside 18 working movie trailers and trucks—straight from productions—and speak directly with professionals from Theatrical Teamsters Local 817 and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 52.
Trucks will include star dressing rooms, electrical, grip, prop, camera, hair-and-makeup, wardrobe, special effects, and more.
Key craftspeople will demonstrate and explain firsthand their roles in the film process. Highlights follow.
- Makeup artists and hair stylists demonstrate applications for everything from glamor looks to cuts and bruises
- Weather effects, including rain and snow created by special-effects craftspeople
- A camera car, a rigged vehicle that supports the filming of scenes set in cars
- A star dressing room and honeywagons (aka Lucy and Desi washrooms)
- Food available for purchase
- Remarks from NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Pat Swinney Kaufman and other special guests
New York on Location will unfold in the Kaufman Astoria Studios backlot (36th Street between 34th and 35th avenues), Museum of the Moving Image (36-01 35th Ave.), and surrounding streets.
Editor’s note: Also on Sept. 15, MoMI will offer 20 percent discounts for general admission with free access to the first-floor spaces and courtyard.
