#Newsflash | The Sacred Music Chorale of Richmond Hill Offers Mozart’s ‘Grand Mass’ on April 13

Here’s the chance to listen to a full orchestra and a talented soloists perform one of the most beautiful compositions of all time.

The Sacred Music Chorale of Richmond Hill offers Mozart’s “Grand Mass” during a special afternoon of classical music at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Sunday, April 13, at 3 pm.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote what’s commonly known as “Great Mass in C Minor” from 1782 to 1783 while living in Salzburg, Austria. Scored for one bass, two sopranos, one tenor, a double chorus, and an orchestra, this unfinished work is considered his best ever. It was NOT commissioned. Mozart wrote it for fun, inspired by his recent marriage and his first child’s birth. (Some fans think he wrote it to impress his father.)

The Sacred Music Chorale, which was founded in 2000, is a volunteer group that offers two concerts a year. It has about 40 members who come from as far away as Long Island to participate.

St. John’s Lutheran has been around since 1903, but its church at 86-20 114th St. was built in 1923. Made of stone, it’s in the Gothic style with several stained glass windows, balcony seating, and a 25-rank pipe organ.
