Don’t be surprised if travelers start to hope that their LaGuardia Airport flights have delays.
The Atrium Business & Conference Center is now totally completed and open to the public.
Adjacent to Terminal B’s Departures Level, the 65,000-square-foot venue includes conference rooms, business center services, and several new lounges. One side has views of the Manhattan skyline, while another looks onto LaGuardia’s runways, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows.
Business travelers can conduct meetings and attend conferences there. Others can relax with food, beverages, chairs, tables, screens, and great art, such as Richard Lippold’s Orpheus and Apollo.
Commissioned by Lincoln Center in 1961, the five-ton sculpture (above) consists of thin stainless steel cables and several dozen sheets of copper alloy.
Orpheus and Apollo had been on view in the Grand Promenade at Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall from 1962 until 2014, when it was removed during the reconstruction of what is now David Geffen Hall. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey worked together to restore and install it so it’s back in the public view.
“The aviation community now has a state-of-the-art space to meet at LaGuardia Airport,” stated MCR Chair and CEO Tyler Morse. “We welcome the public to grab a glass of wine or coffee in the Atrium and marvel at the gleaming Orpheus and Apollo sculpture, a symbol of New York City’s vibrant art and culture.”
The Atrium Business & Conference Center is operated by MCR, the same hotelier that runs the TWA Hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport. It was created as part of the LaGuardia Redevelopment Project, which broke ground in 2016. The $8 billion undertaking has mixed customer amenities with state-of-the-art architecture, more spacious gate areas, and a unified terminal system. Two-thirds of the funding comes from private financing and existing passenger fees.
