Here’s the chance to kick off your 2025 resolutions in style!
The American Littoral Society’s Jamaica Bay New Year’s Day Walk is on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 11 am.
ALS Jamaica Bay Guardian Don Riepe will lead a brisk stroll along the beach to visit the hawk watch platform on top of Battery Harris East. Bird-watching and nature are the main themes, but he will probably discuss the area’s history, too. Plus, he’ll try to communicate with a similar ALS-organized group in Red Hook, New Jersey.
Admission is free, but registration is requested. Meet at The Little Church (aka The Chapel) at Murray and Heinzelman roads just inside the 169th Street entrance to Fort Tilden.
Riepe, a long-time Broad Channel resident, knows the area like the back of his hand. In addition to his Guardian title, his resume includes Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Chief Ranger, Co-chair of the Jamaica Bay Task Force, ALS Northeast Chapter Director, and NYC Audubon Advisory Board Member.
His articles and photographs have been published in such journals as “Scientific American,” “Parade,” and “The New York Times.” He’s also been involved in shore cleanups, marsh restorations, wildlife-promotion, and habitat-preservation efforts for several decades.
And last but not least, he’s led countless walks, taken countless photos, and organized countless exhibitions related to the greater Jamaica Bay area.
Founded in 1961, ALS promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same. The nonprofit focuses on Barnegat Bay, Delaware Bay, Jamaica Bay, Sandy Hook, and Sarasota Bay.
