#Newsflash | Taiwanese-American Culture Comes to the Stage with ‘Islanders 3’ on Jan. 27

Taiwan is the world’s largest exporter of orchids. The East Asian island is also famous for a delicious beef noodle soup, night markets, classical music virtuosos, and baseball players. But what about Taiwanese immigrants to Queens?

Learn about their lives through dance, film, karaoke, music, and snacks during Islanders 3: Everybody Put Yo Hands Up! at Flushing Town Hall on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm.

Created by Chieh Hsiung and Yu-Wei Hsiao, the three-part spectacle is inspired by Western and Taiwanese pop culture from the 1960s to 1980s. Audiences can expect Taiwanese karaoke room scenes, iconic singer Teresa Teng, a film screening, and a musical-dance performance reminiscent of Saturday Night Fever while interactive narration creates the feel of a live game show.

General admission is $15 for both productions.

As a dancer, Chieh Hsiung has performed all around New York City, including at Lincoln Center, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and 92Y Harkness Dance Center. She was a resident artist at Culture Lab LIC in 2022.

Yu-Wei Hsiao is a violin virtuoso who can dance while he plays. He has a doctorate in performance from Rutgers University. And like his collaborator, he has rocked stages throughout the Big Apple and he was in residency at Culture Lab LIC the same year.

Flushing Town Hall is located at 137-35 Northern Blvd. Please note that elevator access to the second floor theater is NOT available right now, due to renovations. There is still disability access to the first floor via a lift at the front of the building.
