It’s simple. Red wine goes with red meat, cheese, and chocolate. White wine enhances fish and chicken. And original song recitals match perfectly with community resource fairs.
Culture Lab LIC hosts The Hunger & The Haunt on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5.
Both shows start at 7 pm with a multi-disciplinary show inspired by how members of the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander diaspora reclaim connections to their heritage and discover pathways to ancestral nourishment.
Then at about 8:30 pm, nonprofits that work with the AANHPI communities will share information about their missions – i.e. housing, civic engagement, youth leadership – and offer ways to get involved. Participants include South Asian Youth Action, MinKwon Center for Community Action, and Korean American Civic Empowerment.
Tickets are offered on a sliding scale from $10-$40 in advance and $20-$50 at the door. (Editor’s note: A few free tickets are available for those with financial barriers. Send an email to [email protected].)
Now back to the show. Via contemporary dance, spoken poetry, and classical music by AANHPI composers, Hunger & Haunt follows a Chinese American girl trying to find her way home as she traverses a mysterious pit of hidden stories.
The ensemble includes Abagael Cheng (soprano), Marie Lloyd Paspe (dancer), and Amber Scherer (piano). The curated recital program features works by Juhi Bansal, Chihchun Chi-Su Lee, Shruti Rajasekar, Angela Yam, Johnum Palado, Teresa Mei Chuc, and others.
Culture Lab, whose main entrance is at 5-25 46th Ave. in Long Island City, is a multi-genre arts promoter based in The Plaxall Gallery. The 12,000-square-foot facility features two fine art galleries, a 90-seat theater, classrooms, and an outdoor event space.
