Shanelle Gabriel is best known for her participation in HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, but the spoken word artist has competed in slams around the world. The Brooklyn native is also a singer, educator, and lupus advocate.
Catch her when she leads Jamaica Mic Drop at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 8 pm.
Free and open to the public, Jamaica Mic Drop is a monthly celebration of the power of words and phrases as well as the vibrant creative community in Southeast Queens.
While Gabriel does her thing, all are invited to express their thoughts, tell their stories, and listen to others.
The next Jamaica Mic Drop, which is scheduled for Sept. 21 at 8 pm, features JRose from the JRose Experience, a traveling talk show.
Jamaica Mic Drop is funded in part by Con Edison. It’s curated by Kevin Livingston, the founder of 100 Suits for 100 Men, a Queens-based nonprofit that provides professional attire for formerly homeless or incarcerated individuals for job interviews. (He’s also an accomplished poet in his own right.)
The Jamaica Performing Arts Center is at 153-10 Jamaica Ave.
