#Newsflash | Skyview Celebrates the Year of the Snake with Live Mural Painting, K-POP + Dance

HoJin Im is a doodle, animation, digital, and documentary artist who’s known for his distinctive character-driven pieces and his use of pop culture to connect communities.

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the South Korea native will be in Flushing to host a Year of the Snake Live Mural-Painting and K-Pop Party at The Shops at Skyview from 2 pm to 5 pm.

With help from Francis Lewis High School students, HoJin will create The Ouroboros, a 40-foot-long mural depicting a snake eating its own tail. (The symbol, which dates to Ancient Egypt, proffers renewal, continuity, and beginnings.) HoJin and the students will hide the snake throughout the mural, hoping viewers will locate it, reflect on its meaning, and engage with the work on a personal level.

Then, of course, it’ll be time to party with live K-Pop, dance performances by AKF Dance Studio, free snacks, drinks, coloring books, and crayons. Plus, Skyview will donate $2,000 to Francis Lewis to distribute to outstanding art students.

Attendance is free, but pre-registration is encouraged. The event is on Level 2 near the Spectrum.

The shopping center will also host Skyview Paramount, a celebration of Chinese culture reminiscent of Old Shanghai’s glamorous era, on Level 4 on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 2 pm to 4 pm. This event is free, too.

Skyview’s address is 40-24 College Point Blvd. The multi-level shopping destination is a few blocks from the 7 train’s Main Street station. Plus, it has a large, multi-level parking lot.

Editor’s note: The Francis Lewis students will not have to miss classes on Jan. 29, as NYC schools will be officially closed for the Lunar New Year.
