Go back in time twice in Bayside this weekend.
The first trip is to Lawrence Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 am. Members of the Bayside Historical Society will lead a free exploration of this NYC landmarked burial ground, where many of the area’s founders are at rest.
Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence, who was New York City’s first popularly elected mayor, is interred there. So are Civil War Colonel Frederick Newbold Lawrence, who went on to be president of the New York Stock Exchange, and Judge Effingham Lawrence, a congressman who served the shortest term in history – one day – in 1875.
The group will meet at the corner of 216th Street and 42nd Avenue.
The second chance to enjoy the wonders of yesteryear is at the BHS Vintage Car Show 2024 in Fort Totten on Sunday, Oct. 6, starting at 9 am. (It’s also free.)
Presented by the Long Island Sound Region of the Classic Car Club of America in conjunction with BHS, the event attracts four-wheelers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and conditions. Attendees can expect to see such brands as Cadillac Eldorado, Ford Model A, Packard, and Plymouth Roadrunner.
Actually, there’s another chance to enjoy a blast from past built into this event as it’ll take place on the lawn in front of the Castle, an NYC designated landmark that’s also listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The three-story, wood-framed Gothic Revival mansion with octagonal corner pavilions was completed in 1887, when Fort Totten was an active military base. The structure, which BHS maintains these days, served as the Officers’ Mess Hall and Club for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The address is 208 Fort Totten Ave. inside Fort Totten.
