The organizers are wonderful. The cause is just. The event is social.
The Bayside 5K is on Sunday, July 13, at 9 am.
Organized by Queens Distance Runners, this family-friendly, two-loop race snakes from Bell Boulevard to 35th Avenue to Crocheron Park and back.
Registration is $35, and QDR will donate 50 percent of the proceeds to the Glen Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
There are also some hyper-local reasons to participate. All current Bayside High School and Benjamin N. Cardozo High School students are eligible for free entry. (To receive a registration code, they should email [email protected].)
Plus, the event always engenders a community celebration on Bell Boulevard, bringing neighbors, small businesses, and student-athletes together.
Bib pickup is at Bell and 41st Avenue at 8 pm. The race starts from that spot at 9 am. The course heads north on Bell, where traffic will be closed, and makes a right turn on 35th Avenue before leading to a turnaround point by Golden Pond in Crocheron Park. It then returns to Bell before looping back to complete one more lap. The finish line is at 41st Avenue and Bell.
Can’t make it? Don’t worry.
QDR also organizes the following summer races: The Rockaway Beach 5K & 10K on Saturday, July 19; The Elmhurst Mile on Saturday, Aug. 2; The Jackson Heights Mile on Saturday, Aug. 30; and the group’s flagship race, the Queens Marathon & QDR Half Marathon on Sunday, Dec. 7.
