Food insecurity is a big problem in New York City right now, and it threatens to get worse due to higher prices, changes in SNAP benefits, and the influx of new populations.
To discuss the nature and extent of the borough’s food insecurity problem and explore ways everyone can join in the fight, the Church-in-the Gardens in Forest Hills will host a free event, Fighting Food Insecurity: How YOU Can Help, on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
The program will feature a panel discussion among representatives from several major organizations currently addressing the problem, including MonkWorx, GrowNYC, City Meals on Wheels, Catholic Charities of New York, Jamaica Hospital/WIC, and Queens Together.
The 108-year-old church’s World Service Committee will moderate the panel. Smaller discussion groups on ways attendees can support these organizations (and others) are also planned.
Attendees will receive a helpful guide with contact information on organizations fighting food insecurity in their neighborhoods.
All are invited, but registration is requested. Click here to register.
Fighting Food Insecurity is scheduled for the Church-in-the-Gardens Community House, which is adjacent to the church at 15 Borage Place in Forest Hills. The venue is within walking distance of the 71st-Continental subway station for the E, F, and R lines and the Long Island Rail Road’s Forest Hills stop. The host venue will provide temporary permits for on-street parking for those who drive.
