British literary legend Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843, and it’s been a hit ever since. In fact, the novella popularized the terms “Merry Christmas,” “Bah Humbug,” and “Scrooge.”
The story takes place on Christmas Eve in a cold London, where businessman Ebeneezer Scrooge terrorizes his employees, refuses to give to charity, and rejects his nephew’s invitation to celebrate with his family. After falling asleep, the grumpy curmudgeon is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley, and then the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Via his dreams, he relives his cranky-pants childhood and sees himself more in love with money than his fiancée. Then, he goes to his clerk’s house, where he sees a sick child who’s full of spirit. Finally, he envisions his own death.
On Christmas Day, a repentant Scrooge wakes up full of excitement and good spirits. He buys a huge turkey for his clerk’s family before spending a happy day with his nephew’s family.
