Performers depict villagers who defeat a terrifying monster, thanks to their courage, ingenuity, and unity. The positive tale also explains some Chinese Lunar New Year traditions, such as wearing red, installing red decorations, and giving away red envelopes.
Tickets cost $15 with discounts for seniors, students, and children.
In 1988, Taiwan native Nai-Ni Chen founded her eponymous, New Jersey-based troupe to fuse American modern dance with the grace and discipline of Asian art. Since then, it has received more than 20 awards from such prestigious entities as the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. She died in a swimming accident in Hawaii on Dec. 12, 2021, but the company continues.
Flushing Town Hall is located at 137-35 Northern Blvd.
Editor’s note: Nai-Ni Chen Dance offered two performances at Kupferberg Center for the Arts last month.
