Sunnyside resident Quinn O’Sullivan is a production director at Woodside-based Spaeth Design, which creates Holiday window displays for such retailers as Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Tiffany & Co. Here’s what he loves about the World’s Most Delicious Borough.
Great Eats
Dawa’s in Woodside is one of my favorites. The menu is creative with Nepali/Tibetan cuisine and American favorites. The atmosphere is full of nice touches like serving bowls made by a potter in Brooklyn and the staff is always warm and friendly. Plus, I always bump into neighbors there.
I’m also big on Maharaja Sweets in Jackson Heights. It’s Indian, vegetarian, and a bit off the beaten path. When I walk in, I feel transported into another world.
Unique Treats
Without a doubt: The Flynndig! Sunnyside musicians get together once a month at Flynn’s Garden Inn (46-08 Skillman Ave., Sunnyside) and sing songs into the wee hours. A few of us play guitar, but we also have percussion, harmonica, fiddle, and other instruments. (Editor’s note: O’Sullivan plays a Gibson J-45) Each night has a different theme, such as British Invasion, Love & Heartbreak or Texas Troubadours. Put simply, we love to play, and luckily, the owners are always hospitable. Plus, it’s become a social event as locals come to hang out and enjoy the scene. (Another editor’s note: The next Flynndig is on May 10 at 9 pm. All are welcome. The theme is Neil Young in honor of his two upcoming concerts at Forest Hills Stadium.)
Wander Streets
I’d say Astoria because it’s loaded with great stores and restaurants. There’s always something new to discover, and I never get tired of exploring its nooks and crannies.
Historic Feats
Old houses are fascinating. I love the way structures from previous eras mix with newer ones in Queens neighborhoods. Near my office in Woodside, there’s a residential house that was a community center in a previous century. It’s still here, but serving a different purpose.
